Devotional: Who Can be Against Us?

The Immovable Ally

"What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?"
Romans 8:31

Have you ever felt completely outnumbered? Maybe it’s not physical enemies, but a mounting todo list, a health diagnosis, an overwhelming sense of anxiety, or the persistent quiet whisper that you aren't enough.

These "things" crowd into our view, demanding our focus, demanding that we surrender to the feeling of being defeated. Paul, writing to the church in Rome, knew this pressure well. But in Romans 8:31, he doesn’t deny the opposition; he reframes it entirely.

Paul's logic is a powerful, cosmic equation: The presence of the Creator cancels the power of the opposition.

The "If" at the beginning of the verse isn't expressing doubt. It is better translated as "Since God is for us..."

This isn't a passive stance. God isn't just watching from the sidelines, casually hoping we succeed. He is for us. He is actively involved. He is our defender, our provider, our strength, and our shelter. He is the immovable ally who secured our ultimate victory through the cross.

When we grasp the magnitude of who is on our side, the question "who can be against us?" changes. It doesn't mean life gets easy. It doesn't mean we won't face trials or experience pain.

It means that no obstacle, no enemy, and no circumstance, no matter how formidable, holds the final word on your life.

They can oppose you, but they cannot defeat you. They can test you, but they cannot separate you from His love.

When you feel outnumbered today, pause and remember the equation: Since God is for you, who can truly stand against you?

Heavenly Father, when the weight of the world feels overwhelming and the challenges before us seem insurmountable, remind our hearts of the unshakable truth found in Your Word. Anchor our souls in the promise that You are actively and powerfully for us. Forgive us for the moments we allow fear to dictate our steps, and fill us with a bold, quiet confidence that comes only from Your presence. Give us the courage to face today not in our own strength, but in Yours.

Amen
